How Do You Take Criticism?

Criticism can hurt deep down in your heart. Believe me, I’ve received criticism quite a bit during my life. I was in theater and radio for years and I’ve heard criticism about my performance millions of time, but it’s been mostly “constructive criticism.”

When I received criticism that was degrading and mean, I just didn’t listen to those people. Although, it did hurt me just a pinch. Ok, maybe more.

If you’re a leader or someone who influences others, you expect criticism. Even parents get criticized by other parents and even from their children. Coaches get criticized from their players, employees from their bosses, and pastors preaching the Gospel.

The list goes on and on, but if we don’t accept the criticism when it is fair, it could keep us from being blind about our weaknesses and hinder us from improving. But if the criticism is not fair, it sometimes can be a negative reaction. That’s what you don’t want to happen. Don’t let others define who you are. Don’t let those who criticize you unfairly.

Take it from me, you can carry that negative criticism for a long time and it is not healthy or fun! Please don’t let others put you down and keep you from becoming all God made you to be.

Do not rebuke mockers or they will hate you;
rebuke the wise and they will love you. — Proverbs 9:8
