Nikki Martinez is the proud owner of the smiling voice you hear weeknights on 91.3 KGLY from 6 -9 p.m. She’s a native Texan, but she’s very forgiving of those of us who got here as fast as we could.
Ten Questions with Nikki Martinez
1. When did you join Encouragement FM?
Would you believe I actually started on Tax Day?! I know, the most dreaded day for most was the BEST day for muah—April 15th, 2013. Never thought I’d be excited for that day to come around!
2. What do you do?
Singing, dancing, knitting … oh, you meant what I do at WORK! Singing, dancing, knitting… Actually, I’m the Music Director of 89.5 KVNE and 91.3 KGLY, and the Evening Show Host, trying to make sure you have the best listening experience you can!
3. Where else have you done similar work?
Before going into radio full-time, I was basically shoved into it all during my summer internship at Houston’s 89.3 KSBJ! After college, this Texas girl moved all the way up to New Hampshire and started my career as Morning Show Co-Host and Assistant Production Director for Magic 104. I’ve also worked as Production Director, Producer, and On-air Host at KVMV in McAllen, TX and Evening Show Host and Producer at Air1 (located in Rocklin, CA)
4. Where did you go to school?
Baylor University (by the grace of God and grants) – Sic’Em Bears!!!
5. Describe your family.
One word—wonderful! Marrying my hubby, Nathan, is one of the best things that could have happened to me, and this isn’t just because I’m a newlywed. He is a rock, an encourager, an excellent cook, a supporter, and my Best Friend! I love him!
6. What do you enjoy most about working here?
Being surrounded by music and the family that I’ve made. Whether in pain, joy, or those moments of in-between, this bunch is here for each other always!
7. Why are you working in this ministry rather than in the for-profit/secular world?
The chance to talk about Christ so freely with the listeners, whether they consider themselves a Christian or not! Plus, I don’t have to deal with all the commercial craziness—there are a TON of middle-men involved with running one commercial, and it can be frustrating if you make any mistake with it.
8. Share a funny story about working here.
Seeing Troy actually “Break-it-down” to I Believe by Mandisa during the last days of PraiseShare (he’ll deny it all he wants, but there are witnesses) was hilarious!
9. What is your best memory/proudest accomplishment from your time here?
Hearing back from the listeners that they really, truly enjoy the songs we play. And, what’s even better, hearing that a song that I scheduled played “right when they needed it.” I wish I could take credit for it, but I’m just the middle-lady between God and the timing.
10. What do you hope to accomplish here?
Make people laugh, feel loved, and maybe learn a little (without them maybe realizing they’ve learned something). God has given me this fantastic opportunity to use the gifts He’s given me, I just pray every day I don’t mess His plans up!
