It’s summer in East Texas and that means hanging out at the lake, swimming, boating, cookouts and mosquitoes! Mosquitoes can sure damper your fun in the great outdoors because they thrive in the humid climate here in East Texas.

Mosquitoes love the East Texas humidity. Children are more at risk than adults when bitten by a mosquito. In fact, some people can have severe life-threatening allergic reactions.

Mosquitoes seem to be especially attracted to larger people and pregnant women. They are also attracted to sweet-smelling lotions and perfumes. Some mosquito breeds prefer dawn and dusk, while others love the hottest times of the day, so it makes sense to stay indoors if possible.

Steer clear of standing water, where mosquitoes breed and swarm, and cover up and wear light-colored long sleeves and pants when you’re near an infested area. If you can, try to remain in an air-conditioned area, and consider putting mosquito netting around beds.

If you don’t want to use products with Deet, here are some natural ways to repel mosquitos:
  1. Lemon Eucalyptus oil can be used to repel mosquitoes.
  2. Rubbing the skin with baby oil or imitation vanilla extract repels biting insects such as mosquitoes and black flies.
  3. One of our favorite remedies is rubbing apple cider vinegar on your skin to repel insects. If you take in enough apple cider vinegar by putting it on foods you eat, you’ll develop a body odor that will repel insects, including black flies. One great and refreshing summer drink for this purpose is switchel, made from apple cider vinegar.
  4. Some people believe garlic works and swallow slivered garlic to ward off these summer pests. Others take garlic tablets or rub garlic juice directly on their skin. Some people apply onion or radish juice for the same purpose.

Have a great mosquito-free summer!
